Farnham craft course week 2 26/2

This week we were able to start the natural dye process focusing on how to get the red and pink colour. We did this in 2 different ways, one being with a type of bug and the other being with madder (a type of plant). I think found it so interesting learning about all the different terminology and extracting the dye with heating the dye or leaving it over night or whether you used the resource directly or in a powder form. We learnt all about the history of the dyes and how they’ve been used before synthetic dyes by people. The process we learnt about in particular was by heating the concentrated dye and adding the same about of dye concentration to fibre, and placing the fibre in a vat and leaving for 45 minutes to allow for the dye to take to the fibre. I really enjoyed learning a deeper understanding about where natural dyes came from as well as how we can use them not to help stop chemical pollution, I felt this linked really well to sustainability as I have recently looked at how factory’s have been dumped chemical, synthetic dyes into people’s drinking water and how that’s effected them and there lives. Learning about natural dyes process really opened my eyes to more solutions to theses pressing problems.
