 overview of work placement

Objectives

During my work placement, I took on a wide variety of new skills, just a few examples of this would be 3D design, meeting with clients and learning the communications needed from them, measuring, mood boarding and organizing of stock and product. this came under activities like making stock lists, creating client mood boards, creating 3D designs of client spaces, specifically for a young girl, as well as an office space, meeting with clients for consultations and measuring spaces, discussing concepts with other colleagues, creating powerpoint presentations.

I am so pleased I was able to learn so many new skills jus a few were new software like pages for PowerPoints and mood boards, coohoms for creating 3D room designs, meeting with clients and learning how to read the room and learning about what kind of questions you need to ask to be clear with your client as to what the expectations are for a project, doing final fittings and making sure every last detail is perfect because your work is such a big reflection on your business, I learnt all about what it takes in order to run your own business and how you have to be constantly looking for new clients and answering people and doing a lot of the admin to keep your business running.

I learnt you need a lot of communication with not only the client but also your other colleagues working on projects with. you have to share what you learnt from the client and relay it back in order to help the projects run smoothly. I personally had to really listen to what was being said to me so that I can understand about what was being asked of me Todo. I didn't want t miss any small details as they could end up being really important to the client. it took a lot of communication to just understand what was going on wit in the company on arrival. but overall I feel I managed a strong level of communication throughout my placement.

throughout my placement that tasks varied between working as a team of no more then 3 on a project and working individually. A lot of my tasks that I completed individually ended up being collected with my other colleges tasks to make up a brief for a client. I overall really enjoyed working both as a team and individually as it gave me so much creative freedom while also having support and help with tasks.

I feel I was able to be as reliably as possible, I was on time every day, I tried my hardest to be as versatile as possible and try my hand at as many tasks as possible, even if it took some time to get there. I had to rely on my colleagues as much as I had to rely on them as we needed to be able to communicate clear with projects and what we all needed to do together in order to create the best result.

There weren't any major problems but there was a lot to work out, for example working out how to use the new software, working out pattern samples. small problems that were an issue they just needed time put into them ignorer to work out any issue that came with it. I enjoy working through these kinds of problems and find it interesting to come up with different solutions and ways to get around it. the one issue I do face to managing my time with problems and not letting myself get frustrated by it.

I had to choose my own times of the day for example when to take a break and lunch and when a task is considered to be done. I had to keep all my belongings well organized so that I was prepared for anything for example bring a notepad, pens, etc... I planned my tasks for the day as well as I could but there were meetings that chopped and changed so just needed to be as flexible as possible.

Overall, I had to manage myself a lot throughout the whole experience, a lot of trusted responsibility placed on me with lots of different tasks to manage myself to do on time. I feel I must have managed myself well and brought enough new and initiative ideas to the table as they offered me a job to do some part-time work with them. I have really enjoyed my time as I was trusted and treated like an employee over being treated as cheap labour.

I really liked watching my skills translate from college to work and seeing how I can work on them ignorer to grow them more. I may approach my ordination differently now I know what I'm trying to achieve. I was initially thinking that I wouldn't enjoy interior design as I wasn't to sure what it was all about, however, now I’m more aware of what they do, I really enjoyed mood boarding and I’m looking forward to see what else they have to offer. I did see interior design as a backup plan however, this placement has opened my eyes to a lot of what interiors have to offer me in the futureI do really like the creative freedom of picking and choosing what designs I like and don't like and what I feel will work best based on my client brief. I haven't had the opportunity yet to speak to a client or be involved in a meeting but I'm hoping this will be another aspect to which I will enjoy. I do want my own business in the future but I'm not sure it would be in interiors specifically because owners in the business tend to have to do a lot more of the donkey work and admin and client finding which just isn't as interesting to me.
